Competition RulesCompetition Rules

  • Properties must be eligible to earn an energy performance rating under the “office” category as defined by ENERGY STAR
  • Participants must submit an entry form by April 30, 2010.
  • Buildings must be over 40,000 square feet.
  • The competition has two distinct phases, with awards and recognition announced in May of 2011 and again in May of 2012.  To be eligible for either, buildings must complete ENERGY STAR benchmarking for three calendar years, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
  • The first 50 buildings to sign-up, submit benchmarking scores, and complete utility data release forms will be eligible for free Scoping Studies conducted by BetterBricks technical teams.  Additional buildings may receive Scoping Studies if budget and timing allow.
  • Participants who receive a Scoping Study agree to provide any previous studies, audits, and energy savings analyses from the previous 18 months.  The results of these reports will be considered by BetterBricks in evaluating the need for additional or supplemental study.  In rare instances, BetterBricks may refer the building to other organizations for analysis, or decide that additional study is not required.
  • Winners of the “Highest Performing Building” prize will be determined based on the building’s ENERGY STAR rating for December 2010, and for December 2011.
  • Winners of the “Greatest Improvement” category will be determined based on the percentage change in ENERGY STAR ratings from December 2009 to 2010, and again from December 2010 to December 2011.
  • If necessary, BetterBricks, utility staff, or members of the competition jury will be allowed to verify submittal data and inspect properties to confirm ENERGY STAR ratings.
  • The “Climate Leader” and “Most Valuable Tenant” awards will require additional submittals and information, to be announced after the close of the entry period (April 30, 2010).  Participation in either of these categories is optional.
  • Energy performance ratings will be submitted to a specified Master account via the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager “Share” feature.
  • Participants agree that benchmarking results will be shared with BOMA International as part of their efforts to track member accomplishments nationwide.
  • Buildings seeking ENERGY STAR qualification may be required to provide additional utility data as requested by the engineer.
